Landfill Composition

The landfill is made up of three individual cells.

24 acre cell for household garbage, industrial waste and ash.
11 acre ash monofill.
19 acre quarry for construction debris and non-household waste.

Curbside trash is reduced 90% before it comes to the landfill as ash

Within the active landfill cells, there are many layers. Before garbage or trash is put into a landfill cell, plastic liners, clay barriers, a leachate collection system, fabric filters, sand and gravel are installed to keep leachate (polluted rainwater) from seeping into the soil and groundwater. This type of landfill is called a Subtitle D Landfill.

Landfill vs. Dumps

"Dumps" are a thing of the past because of concerns about pollution. Open dumps were large pits where trash was left uncovered.

All curbside garbage is incinerated at the Waste-to-Energy facility where the bulk is reduced by 90%Landfills, such as the one in Huntsville, are considered to be sanitary and better for the environment. The holes are dug, then barriers, filters, and liners are placed, waste is put in and a layer of earth is used to cover the waste. Because of these barriers, pollution from the waste does not seep into the ground and scavenger pests are reduced.

Recycling Methane Gas Byproducts

Methane gas is collected and recycledWhen food, leaves and other living organisms decay within the landfill, methane gas is naturally produced. Because a landfill is made of closed spaces, the methane gas can pose some danger if not carefully controlled. In order to relieve the gas buildup, collection wells with a delivery pipeline safely collect the methane gas.

Methane is the main ingredient in natural gas used for cooking, heating and creating electricity. SWDA can use methane at the Waste-to-Energy facility as an auxillary fuel.

The Huntsville landfill is open for business and tours Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. If your group would like a tour of the landfill, please call 256-880-6054 or email SWDA.
